Making the most of your home this summer

The days are at their longest and the sun is starting to really shine through, so now is the perfect time to have a clear out and spruce up your home to make it an enjoyable place to live this summer. Your home is your sanctuary, and we can help you to make it so beautiful you won’t want to go away on holiday!

Summer is peak time for entertaining friends and family, just make sure you have enough seats for those spontaneous BBQs. Extendable tables can transform a compact space into a party palace. If you have a larger space, a wooden table with benches will allow you to squeeze in the optimum number of guests. Beanbags are also a great option for extra guests to sink into and chill out; they can be used both in and outdoors and be chucked in the shed when not needed!

Bring the outside in…
Nature and greenery create a calming atmosphere and should feature inside your home as well as out. Green walls are a contemporary way to introduce texture or, if you’re not very green fingered, artificial plants have come a long way since the flower arrangements of the eighties.

 Fleurs Naturals Guernsey

Besides plants, rustic wooden floors provide a great base for any natural-feeling interior, and the finishing touches can be achieved with some natural scents.

Images show our preserved plants and greenery, needing very little care and lasting years and years, also our room mists from local company Fleurs Naturals.

…or the indoors out

Outdoor furniture is more stylish than ever, creating the perfect getaway in your own garden. A large corner sofa is great for socialising, and why not add a super-comfy lounger to keep all for yourself?

Outdoor Furniture Guernsey

From firepits to socialise around to mood-creating lanterns, there is plenty of choice if you want to introduce fire into your outdoor space. Log fires give off an amazing amount of heat to keep your guests warm whilst they gaze at the stars at the end of a great night.

Glammfire Fires Guernsey

Fires can still play a part indoors in the summer: as the night cools it’s lovely to cosy up besides a small heat source. Bioethanol fires are perfect for this and can make a stunning feature.

Images show just a small selection of the amazing range that Glammfire supply Bonsai.

Introducing a splash of colour

Remove all of the dark textural accessories and replace them with a splash of colour. Earthborn, our paint supplier, has come up with some great suggestions for colours to brighten up your home this summer; our favourites are ‘The Lido’ mixed with ‘Pumpkin Pie’ or a splash of their ‘Grasshopper’ green. Rugs and throws are one of the easiest ways to introduce colour on a budget, and can be easily changed when you find a new favourite colour.

The Bonsai Wedding Fair – Discover the top 10 wedding trends of 2016

Planning a wedding can be a daunting task, so with the very first Bonsai Wedding Fair coming up on Sunday, we’ve quizzed our exhibitors to give you the top wedding trends for 2016.

I learnt that there are lots of ways to make weddings more exciting and stylish then ever. And it’s all achievable with Guernsey-based suppliers and wedding experts.

Whether you want to create relaxed feel, need some creative inspiration or want the low-down on the newest technologies, you’ll find it at the Bonsai Wedding Fair.

Here is our take on the top wedding trends to give couples ideas to create an event to remember.

Bohemian chic
If you are a free-spirited woman then free-flowing dresses, pretty floral headbands and organic flowers will appeal.

Simply Tipi can provide you with the perfect boho setting, with their unique tipi tents. Dress them with wild flowers from Blossom & Green to create a delicate, carefree look.

Bright colours and rich hues
Hot summers mean hot colours. Trade in traditional bridal neutrals for a bolder, more refreshing palette. Yellows, teals and pinks, even the odd splash of neon. You could introduce colour in the bride’s flowers, bridesmaid dresses or at the table with linen, candles and other decorations.

Natural and organic
Reclaimed wood, cork and stone, it’s all about the rustic feel. Popular organic additions are pinecone place card holders, locally-made favours and hessian table runners. We love how reclaimed windows and wine crates can be used for signage or seating.

Rose gold / coppers
Metallics have been trending across homewares for several seasons and have now crossed over into events and weddings. Rose gold jewellery is a popular feminine choice. Copper table details, like cutlery and plates, look stunning in the evening candlelight.

Custom cocktail
Make your guests feel extra special and create a really exclusive vibe. Custom cocktails are very trendy and mobile bar companies like Aperitif make it easy to have your own personalised drinks. ‘His and her’ signature cocktails and even self-serve drinks are also popular.

360 degree wedding videos
The newest video technology for weddings available in Guernsey is 360 degree wedding videos from Dorfmeister studios. Happy couples will be able to relive the moment forever, from every angle.

Hand lettering
Handmade touches have really come back into fashion, with the delicate lettering of calligraphy and hand-written invitations. Guernsey’s talented graphic designers are the perfect people to contact for on-trend typographic-based invitations.

Bold lighting
Chandeliers hanging from opulent marquees, romantic bistro-style lighting tangled in the trees and letter lights to spell out the word ‘love’. These all bring a new level of attention to detail to your event. The latest technologies can also provide you with an LED patterned dance floor.

Action shots
Photography has moved on a lot from the posed family shots in front of the church. Natural, reportage-style shots taken throughout the day are now the favourite. Some wedding parties decide to have a bit of fun with their photos and opt for a humorous take on the traditional pictures like this one from Your Moments Captured.

Mix and match styles
Very much like your home, wedding themes are now more eclectic with mismatched bridesmaid dresses and mix of styles. Use of vintage home accessories and touches like oddly-matched chairs add to this style.

File it, shelve it, hide it. Get organised in 2016

In the post Christmas life can feel a little cluttered. The season of giving means plenty of new things in the house that need a home and paperwork tends to pile up – it’s time to get organised.

January is the perfect time for a clear out. It feels good to find constructive jobs to do in the house when the weather outside is cold and wet.

Get your house in order and tackle those annoying storage problems that tend to niggle away but never get resolved.

Bonsai has all of your storage needs covered. From beautifully crafted display cabinets, to funky shelving and unique coat racks.

Here are Bonsai's top top storage picks for the year ahead.

Sideboards that aren’t boring

Bonsai’s V-lab range will inject a pop of colour and some on-trend texture into your home with their use of reclaimed wood and powder-coated metal. The sideboard from their cabinet range is a statement piece in any room.

This style complements a contemporary, industrial or eclectic interiors style. Bonsai has other pieces to match, including some handy cube storage boxes.

The Mister sideboard from Wewood is a stand-out piece. The designer’s attention to detail and sideboard’s versatility will appeal to fans of good design and workmanship.

The interior can be completely rearranged for the owner’s individual needs. It works as a bar, a desk or simply a sideboard.

Next on Bonsai’s must-have list of stylish storage ideas, is something more eclectic. With its Mango wood cabinet and multi-coloured drawers the 'Kunda' range turns storage into an eye-catching focal point.

The many different colour and handle arrangements will definitely bring some fun to your space. Available in various configurations, these units are very affordable.

X2 is new!

X2 is an exciting new find for Bonsai. This is a Portuguese joinery brand, creating practical works of art. The X2 smart shelving system has lots of customisation options thanks to a clever wooden slat and brass screw system.

We love these shelves – as will anyone who likes attention to detail and great craftsmanship.

Get hung up

Wewood’s ‘Cancan’ coat stand is a simple and solid structure held together with leather rope. The dance moves and costumes of the famous French cancan dancers inspired the design.

Cancan in oak £655 or walnut £855

Show Off

Piet Boon is one of most stylish designers we know from the Netherlands. His Tjerk cabinet is made from solid ash wood. The simple yet clever design allows you to stack each cabinet or place them side-by-side.

The clean lines complement any room, or even the office, and show off your ornaments, glassware, books and accessories perfectly.

The cabinets also look great from the back, allowing you to use them to zone off spaces.

Tjerk Cabinet starts from £1,698

Finishing touches

Lastly, but certainly not least, an old favourite from Bonsai’s Sensu range.

This solid oak wine rack is available in two sizes, but most people choose the larger size which holds 24 bottles. This is a stylish way to show off your wine collection. (If you have any left after Christmas!)

2015 – Another year to remember at Bonsai

It’s been a brilliant year at Bonsai. Our big news for 2015 was the refurbishment of our Home showroom. It gave us the opportunity to introduce lots of new furniture and more exciting brands.

The polished concrete floor really set the scene for the new showroom, with its modern, contemporary look.

We then created five areas to showcase all of our favourite styles and the exclusive brands we have available, with a more ethnic and industrial zone, contrasting the sleeker, more contemporary office area.

We also introduced a new space, which we call our “showcase” area. Our intention is to redesign this section every few months, bringing in new designers, limited edition items or the work of young, new designers. This is also where shoppers can find some really unique and lovely accessories, perfect for gifts or adding the finishing touches to your home.

Bonsai's showroom in Guernsey

Mid summer saw Bonsai supporting Guernsey’s Skipton Arts festival and we exhibited the work of two local artists, Bridget Spinney and Frances Lemmon, in the Home showroom.

Alongside this we hosted an evening of drinks and art. This is something we are going to repeat towards the end of January 2016 for all of you art and design enthusiasts.

Skipton Arts Festival at Bonsai in Guernsey

In the autumn we saw lots of Bonsai fans at the Homelife show at Beau Sejour and moved most of our showroom to the exhibition stand.

Here we launched our new flooring range - ‘Design Parquet’ and raised over £1,500 for the Bridge To charity via a silent auction for the gorgeous platinum floor which was on our stand.

Homelife show in Guernsey

To finish off the year, I have asked my Bonsai colleagues to look back and choose their favourite item from our Home collection.

Debbie loved our Heaven sofa so much she had to buy one for her own living room.

Kath made sure our Qlock Two Touch was on her Christmas list this year…but has she been naughty or nice?

Paul is a fan of the classic but contemporary furniture by Jess, a Dutch designer range.

I am still in love with the Vita Eos feather lights shades – they are simple yet stunning.

Garret was amused by our fake boars head, especially when we added some sunglasses.

Lee has had his eye on the multi-coloured bulldog statues all year.

Mat loves the simplicity and ethnic look of the petrified wood carved fish.

We have all enjoyed this year thoroughly. It’s been great seeing so many customers in the Bonsai showrooms and we look forward to inviting you to all the events planned for 2016.

Happy New Year from everyone at Bonsai!

11 reasons to hire an interior designer

If you are not sure how an interior designer can help give your home a stylish new look here are 11 reasons from Bonsai’s Interior Design team that will have you convinced.

1. An interior designer will achieve the most within your budget and time frames

Interior designers are here to achieve as much as they can for you within the budget you initially discuss with them.

Conversely, when choosing materials and furniture by yourself you can often get carried away and make expensive mistakes. Plus doing the research from Guernsey and taking the time to choose can be very time consuming and can lead to the project dragging on.

2. You’ll get fresh new ideas and a different design perspective

A fresh eye is sometimes all you need. When you are so close to the project and using the space every day it can be hard to see the obvious.

Interior designers really get to know you and how you use the space to make sure it is laid out and used in the most practical and aesthetic way for you.

3. We will introduce designers and brands that you probably won’t have heard of before

There is so much amazing design out there and Bonsai has great connections across Europe and beyond. We have spent a lot of time finding the most interesting and best suppliers from all over the world. We’ve done all the hard work for you!

4. You can tap into lots of specialist knowledge and resources

Bonsai has a wealth of experience and through the years we have solved many interior design challenges. We now have a solution for almost anything which saves our clients time, money and more than a few headaches!

5. Bonsai only uses trusted contractors so you can be sure of high quality workmanship

Nobody likes a cowboy, and there are plenty of them around. Luckily for Bonsai’s customers we have our own team of joiners and carpenters whom we have carefully selected. Our work is of the highest quality and we also have a great list of third-party contractors who share Bonsai’s high standards.

6. You will get exclusive discounts and never pay more than RRP

As an interior design company and retail outlet we are in a position to pass on favourable discounts to our customers. You will never pay more than the recommended retail price when using our interior design service.

7. Katie will take all the stress out of choosing furniture, lighting and accessories

There is so much to think about when putting a space together and it’s the way that all the elements and finishing details work in harmony that gives a cohesive look and feel. We are here to help your home feel, well, like home.

As an experienced interior designers Bonsai are here to help you choose everything from colour schemes to lighting and even the perfect cushions.

8. You'll avoid costly mistakes and even increase the value of your home

Choosing the wrong product or finish is a mistake you’ll have to live with…. or lead to a costly replacement.

Through Bonsai’s interior design service make sure that everything chosen suits your lifestyle and will last you a lifetime. Making sure you have these long-lasting products in your home will increase the value and really appeal to any prospective buyers if you decide to move on to a new home.

9. We will make the most of your existing furniture, giving it a new lease of life or showing off heirlooms or family favourites in a new way

Using an interior designer doesn’t mean you need to completely start again (although we can if you want!).

If you have a beloved chair or a cabinet from your grandma you want to keep, we can incorporate it into a room, or even make it the starting point for a new design. We also suggest ways to give an old favourite piece a new lease of life.

10. Interior design isn’t just for the home

Our interior design skills can be applied to making your office, retail space or restaurant a great place to do business. Stylish interiors will reflect your corporate values. Let your office do the talking and you’ll love the way your clients and customers respond.

11. You’ll have a room or a home that works for you and your lifestyle, for years to come

With the continuous stresses of life it really is important that your home is your sanctuary. Somewhere to escape and relax. Whether you love to entertain, have a large family or are a single person with a craving for the quiet life, we will make your space work for you.

Investing time and money in your home can make a huge difference for years to come.
